2021.09.28 06:03 cepheuscloud Losing interest in SWE as a new grad

I've been 3 months on the job at my first real software engineering job out of college. On paper, I have little to complain. The company is paying me a very competitive salary (US HCOL 100k). I have the option of working remote or in the office, and the working hours are flexible. Most people work 9-5 remotely and there is no expectation for overtime. The company has healthy leadership and is in growth stage transitioning from a startup.
My colleagues are smart and helpful, and my manager does not micromanage me at all. I work in backend engineering, mostly in internal tooling, and so when I don't finish my tickets we can easily spill the tickets over to the next sprint. When I got the job, I felt incredibly grateful that my technical interview prep and resume tailoring got me an offer that I really like.
Now that I'm on the job, I can't help but feel apathetic to my everyday work. My main enjoyment from studying CS and programming came from building apps and personal projects, where I did much of the programming and created solutions to problems I faced or people around me faced.
I'm pretty indifferent to the product suite that my current company develops, and I work in backend infrastructure so out of all possible teams mine has least relevance to the product itself despite being the backbone of the product. This means I hardly learn what the consumer wants and do not get much feedback from my work, which I would greatly enjoy more of. I'd think I would have more enthusiasm if I knew more about the product but it's hard to do so working on such an abstract level. As a side note, I think most people being remote has had a negative effect on the culture. I find my days most enjoyable when people are around in the office and I can have conversations besides my tickets and passively absorb what is going on in the company.
But that is probably not the biggest gripe. The main aspect is that I've come to realize that SWE is not programming, and many days I hardly even write a line of useful code. It's really hard reading and sifting through legacy code, spaghetti documentation, tech debt etc. The APIs and services I do write are not intrinsically challenging, but there's layers upon layers of abstraction that I have to mentally decipher. I like working by myself or with a small group of friends on personal projects. Granted, they've mostly been POCs, but I like the feeling of being able to program and design a lot.
My current plan is to stick around for at least a year or so since 3 months is too soon to say I don't like being a SWE and then try pivot to PM, or join a big, established tech company with a product I like where there is more structure.

2021.09.28 06:03 Missing_Back Confused about a sentence; regarding genitive, один, and maybe accusative?

Она покупает пять болших бутылк сока и одну маленькую бутылку вина.
The words that cause confusion are bold.
I know that один doesn't behave like other numbers when saying "[number] of [thing]", so the way I conjugated that half of the sentence was "...одна маленькая бутылка вина", thinking that, because it's only one, nothing needs to be genitive. But I was wrong. What's going on here? Is this accusative? Why?

2021.09.28 06:03 amethysst I put in my two weeks because my job would not honor my time off requests.

Is it petty? Maybe, but management is not only abusive but also unaccommodating. The reasoning was, "we are down a person and very busy next month, so I can only honor one of your requests." I replied that unfortunately being able to take both is a deal breaker, so I will be resigning effective two weeks from today.

2021.09.28 06:03 IThinkImNateDogg Please make more collectors editions

Title. Last year the collectors editions were available to buy for multiple months, and unless theirs some massive spike in demand for them, more available to pre order. This year, they sold out immediately with no advanced notice they would even be for sale or their price. Due to how things worked, I couldn’t even earn a paycheck in that period and when I did they were al sold out. I even put my email in, for when more stock would arrive, and none ever did. If WQ is going to be 6 months away, I don’t understand how you can plan to allow as many people order for at least 3 months. That’s the whole point of pre orders, to properly plan and account for the known amount of orders

2021.09.28 06:03 vidyutmandrake How can I increase my chances of getting this Product Marketing Internship?

The job is for an ed-tech startup, and the post is titled "Product Marketing". The following information was listed under 'Responsibilities'

Can someone please explain to me what skills I need to showcase or acquire if I were to interview for this job? Assume that I know nothing about Product Marketing jobs and etiquette because frankly, I don't. I really need this job/internship, but am afraid that my lack of experience will butcher any chances I might have.
P.S. If this information is needed then please note that I am currently working as a content writer, but the work is repetitive and not helping me develop my personality, which is why I am looking for better roles.

2021.09.28 06:03 Twistedshakratree Having issues with Rasbian on pi3b+ and new protonvpn-cli

So I was running the old legacy pvpn on my pi3 and 4 for 1-2years now and went to image a new sd card to the latest Rasbian 32b and installed the latest protonvpn as outlined in the guides. I am unable to connect to vpn after logging in as it is telling me I have to login first, rinse and repeat every option. I am also not able to update as it appears the repo link is not accessible:
```W: Skipping acquire of configured file 'main/binary-armhf/Packages' as repository ' stable InRelease' does not seem to provide it (sources.list entry misspelt?)```
Running the protonvpn on a Pi4 4gb with ubuntu 21 64b I am also getting incorrect IP errors to update and also having issues with logging in. This is very unfortunate as I had ran the legacy code for almost 2 years no issues. The new cli version is more combersome than the legacy application to use. I don't have issues with Windows or OSX (intel or m1) gui versions, only the ArmHF versions for pi. I also have premium plan up to 5 nodes.
2021.09.28 06:03 d3vilsfire [EVENT] Reformation of Indian Federal Forces III
Indian Ground Forces (IGF)
With the unrest growing in the subcontinent, and the growth of industry in India, further reforms for the armed forces is scheduled to take place. With more money available, the size of the Indian Ground Forces (IGF) is expected to grow significantly, especially with the availability of more equipment from our allies and the veteran manpower from WW2.
Unit type Troops
Motorized Infantry Division 14,750
Mechanized Infantry Division 12,500
Mountain Infantry Division 10,000
Armored Division 14,750
Gurka Regiment 1,250
Airborne Division 8,000
Current Size
Name Current
Motorized 73,750
Mechanized 50,000
Armored 29,500
Airborne 8,000
Gurkha 3,750
Total 165,000
Name Current Divisions Current Troops New Divisions Troop Increase New Division Total New Troop Total
Motorized 6 88,500 +6 +88,500 12 177,000
Mechanized 5 62,500 +5 62,500 10 125,000
Gurkha 4 Regiments 5,000 0 0 4 Regiments 5,000
Total 19 208,250 +20 +262,750 39 471,000
Many of these new divisions will be pulling from the nearly 1 million WWII veterans we still have in the country, as well as training a new younger generation. This is our planned increase over the next 3 years given our experienced pool to pull from, and the restraint being economic reasons and not an issue of manpower. We will reassess our forces in 3 years to see if we can raise it to nearly 700k by 1960.
The introduction of the Mountain Infantry Division is a philosophical understanding that we need to have dedicated units in mountainous geographic locations. Our Motorized and Gurkha troops have been utilized in this role, but it makes far more sense for a country like ours to have specialized and dedicated troops to combat in the mountains. While we plan to not operate on a division organization level in the deployment of these forces, organizationally, it makes sense to have them currently organized into 3 main divisions that are spread out across India's mountain borders.
With these new divisions, India will be looking to adopt some of the newer small arms that have been in production for several years. As we look to move on from the British weapons that we have used, and seeing the failure of some of the WW2 weapons in the Greek Civil War, we hope to adopt a new standardization.
The Walther P38 Pistol, Walther PP, and Lahti L-35 pistols have been in production for several years now, and have been slowly integrated into our armed forces. These have become well known and well liked among those issued in service, with the Lahti being especially popular in the colder regions of India.
The MP40 has become a more favored submachine gun than the Sten, though conversion to these guns have taken some time. Factoring in that it is not a new bullet we would have to chamber, the adoption is more about the feel of the weapon. We have heard good rumors about the Uzi, which also uses a similar caliber, and we could look for adoption to this. New units will be issued the MP40, while older units will be slowly replacing the Sten with the MP40 for the time being.
After experiences in the World War, the world has moved on from rifles as the primary infantry weapon onto what seems to be a new weapon called an assault rifle. We currently have been using the Lee Enfield as a carryover from our times under British rule. We did make several copies of the StG 44, but we are not sure if that is the rifle we would like to formally adopt. Therefore, we would like to reach out to the USSR in order to license produce the AK-47 given the large number of orders we will be making. As we look to replace the Lee Enfield as a rifle, we will also reach out to the USSR for licensed production of the SKS and RPD LMG as they both use the 7.62×39mm which is also used with the AK-47. This means that the units that will be using these weapons will have standardization of munitions. We will also look to re-chamber the MG-42 and MG-34 in order to fire the 7.62×39mm bullet that we are standardizing with if the licensed production is accepted.
Gun Caliber Role
Walther P38 Pistol 9×19mm Parabellum Service Pistol
Walther PP 9×19mm Parabellum Service Pistol
Lahti L-35 pistols 9×19mm Parabellum Cold-weather Service Pistol
MP 40 9×19mm Parabellum Standard Sub-machine gun
Uzi 9×19mm Parabellum Standard Sub-machine gun
AK-47 7.62×39mm Standard Assault Rifle
SKS 7.62x39mm Standard Semi-automatic carbine
RPD machine gun 7.62x39mm Standard Light machine gun
MG 42 7.62x39mm Standard General-purpose machine gun
MG-34 7.62x39mm Standard Vehicle mounted gun
With the standardization of our weapon systems, this will be critical in the modernization of our armed forces as we look to develop a strong cohesive unit.
Royal Air Force of India (RAFI)
With the expansion of the RAFI thanks to new deals with Sweden and the USSR, we are looking to increase our dominance in the air. The expanded forces will be moving from 40,000 to 65,000 personnel in the next 3 years, with an eventual increase to 90,000 hopefully in the 4 years after that. With new jets and planes at our disposal, we are looking forward to the continued modernization and development of the RAFI. We will be looking to make requests to various foreign suppliers in order to complete our air force.
Indian Home Guard (IHG)
The IHG will be receiving a lot of the excess equipment from the IGF. We will be working on the training of the IHG as we have seen a rise in tensions throughout the subcontinent. Given this, it is critical that the IHG is ready for mobilization and is well trained.
Indian Special Forces (ISF)
With the expansion of the IGF, we will be re-organizing the Airborne Divisions and the Gurkha regiments from being part of the ISF into being directly under the IGF. This means that the ISF will be rebuilt as a 1,000 man strong unit that consists of the best soldiers from the IGF. Organized into 4 squadrons, these troops will receive the best training, and will be trained in all environments and combat situations. The best of the best, the ISF Commandos will be the pride of India.
